Only three days to go!
I’m seriously ready for my break now and it’ll be great to see C and M. I haven’t seen them in around eighteen months but more on that later in the week. This post is about other things. For today I must compile that all important, critical, make or break item: the holiday reading list.
This crucial document is more than just a shopping list, like a good compilation record get it wrong and it can ruin the whole break. On the one hand – because it’s an English speaking country – the risk is lower as I can always buy more and on the other it’s higher – twenty-nine hour flights do not as yet offer an in flight library.
So here’s my draft list:
King Rat by China Mieville
Singularity Sky by Charlie Stross
The Yiddish Policeman’s Union by Michael Chabon
The Man Who was Thursday by G. K. Chesterton
The Unbearable Lightness of Being in Aberystwyth by Malcom Pryce
Fresh Fields by Peter Kocan
Brasyl by Ian McDonald (Yes, I haven’t read it…stop sniggering at the back)
The Ghosts Brigade by John Scalzi
The Complete Short Stories by Franz Kafka
That’s it for now. Of course, I’m a terrible impulse buyer when it comes to books and so I may wind up with a larger haul.
What do you plan on reading on your holidays this year?
Going to try and finish Cryptonomicon, which I’ve been slowly hacking away at since Christmas. After that , there’s Danielewski’s House of Leaves, and my first encounter with Michael Marshall Smith.
Then what? Ryman’s The Child Garden, Snow Crash, Brasyl, and as much Sterling as I can lay my grubby little hands on.
I loved Cryptonomicon and Snow Crash is tremendous fun – I think you’ll enjoy.
If you’re gonna read Chabon, why not just read (or reread) The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Simply amazing . . .
Have you read Life of Pi yet? Don’t even say you haven’t . . . !
This summer, if I can squeeze it in between classes, work and kids, I want to read the D&D 4.0 core rule books. How’s that for ambition!
Have a nice holiday.
Brian
I read my bookywook (Russell Brand Biography) on holiday. That’s about as far as my reading goes, I will then be reading your stuff.
Brian – I have read Life of Pi; liked it a lot. I very nearly picked up Kavalier & Clay but I’ve promised myself TYPU for too long to hold off.
Sis – Bookywook I plan on reading myself at some point, I quite like Russell’s radio show, but I can’t bring myself to buy it as he’s so annoying in person.
you can borrow it. I feel sorry for him.
Best book I’ve read in awhile?…
The Stars My Destination

I can’t find Tractors In Ukranian which I was reading and has magically vanished. Grr! Other than that probably J-Pod, The Slash autobiography and Jen is after me to read something that appears to be the vampire version of Harry Potter. If it’s crap I supposed I can always drop it off the boat in Croatia!
