As most fantasy fans probably know by now Robert Jordan (real name Jim Rigney) lost his long battle with illness on Sunday. He was just 58.
The Vietnam vet turned physics graduate turned writer was/is amongst the giants of the fantasy genre as can be seen by the upswelling of sentiment currently being paid him on the Internet.
It feels, to me, like the fantasy genre has taken a bit of a kicking recently with both Jim and David Gemmell (1948-2006) passing in little over a year. Neither one was over 58. Both told a ripping yarn.
