I’m around three weeks from my self imposed deadline for the first draft of the current work in progress.

I don’t like talking about draft zero/one while they are underway but this is the contemporary fantasy novel I have been chipping away at over the last few months and, as you will see from the progress bar on the right, I am around about 15k behind where I should be. That’s not too shabby given the amount of stuff going on at present.

In terms of the story, it means I’m kind of in the middle and that’s probably the toughest part of the slog for me. At this stage I’m an equal distance from the beginning and the end, trying to figure out why I thought it was such a good idea in the first place. This caused me to slow down a bit last weekend. I resolved it by going back to my outline to revisit where I was going. I mention this only because it may be of use to someone else as it helped me no end and when I’ve been able to get to my desk this week I have been making good progress.

I’m a tad concerned I am going to massively overshoot with word count right now. This won’t be too much of a problem asĀ  it’s such an early draft but my target includes a deliberate overshoot on word count as for me it’s easier to take out than put in when it comes to writing and so that might make the second draft a bit more time consuming.

My goal for this weekend is to try and get as close to the 70k mark.

Wish me luck.
