This year I will be fundraising again for SANDS in memory of my oldest boy, Ziggy, who would have been four years old on the 23rd April, 2017. I have re-opened my Just Giving page to this end and will be running in the Cardiff Bay 10k in a couple of weeks. I plan to run at least once more this year and may do some other things over the next few months.
SANDS is a charity that helps families that have lost children to neonatal death and stillbirth. They also lobby for better practices around antenatal care that can help reduce the chance of this kind of child loss. In the UK, 15 babies a day are stillborn or die within 4 weeks of birth. At the time we lost Ziggy, the stillbirth rate was higher and hadn’t moved in years, it was amongst the worst in Europe. In recent years, it has started to fall, thanks in part to the lobbying of charities like SANDS. Our stillbirth rates remain high and there is more to do.
