Tick tock, tick tock: 31 days until the release of the second installment in Stephen Donaldson’s final trip to the world of Thomas Covenant.
Donaldson took a deliciously dark view on epic fantasy with his break through trilogy “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant Unbeliever”, unfairly but understandably compared to Tolkien if you haven’t read any of his stuff you’re missing out on a treat.
If you prefer science fiction then check out the GAP sequence, they’re good but it’s for Covenant I hope he is remembered.
I’m lucky enough to have a signed first edition of “The Runes of the Earth” and hopefully, if he comes over the pond again, I’ll get the second book signed as well.
I’ve just introduced my two sons, 14 and 12, to the Thomas Covenant series. I read them when I was around their age–just the first three books; the trilogy came to a perfect conclusion so why bother with any more? Haven’t read any since. Good fantasy though (a rarity) with a three dimensional character and writing that isn’t mere hackwork.
Yeah the first Chronicles are the best. For me there was just something quite interesting about trying to go back to the character after such a well crafted ending, after the second chronicles the ending is even more defined so the Runes of the Earth was a real challenge. Anyway I hope your boys enjoy them, I think I was about a year older than your oldest when I read them for the first time.
